Zinc bisglycinate is zinc bound to the amino acid glycine. It is used in zinc supplements such as tablets, capsules and gummies, to fortify foods, and in animal feed, where organic zinc sources allow lower zinc levels in the diet.

Technical details

Zinc bisglycinate holds a zinc ion between two glycine molecules. Supplement makers use it for the same reasons they use the magnesium and iron chelates: it is neutral, it is mild in taste compared with zinc sulfate, and it sits easily in tablets, capsules and gummies. In animal feed it is one of the organic zinc sources that let nutritionists meet the animal's requirement at a lower inclusion rate than inorganic zinc oxide or sulfate, which matters where regulators cap the zinc going into manure. Ehlinar supplies supplement and feed grades, specified by zinc content.

Appearance: White to off-white powder; dispersible to soluble in water, depending on the grade.

Frequently asked questions

What zinc content should I expect?
The pure anhydrous chelate is about 31% zinc by weight. Commercial grades are often a hydrate and run somewhat lower. Specify the zinc content your formulation uses and ask for the assay against it.
Is it the same as zinc gluconate or zinc citrate?
No. They are different compounds with different zinc contents, taste and solubility. Zinc bisglycinate is a chelate of zinc and glycine; gluconate and citrate are salts of organic acids.
How is it stored?
Cool, dry and sealed.
