L-Citrulline is an amino acid first found in watermelon. The body converts it into arginine, and taken by mouth it raises arginine levels more effectively than arginine itself. It is mainly sold in sports supplements, often as citrulline malate, and is also used in medical nutrition.
Technical details
L-Citrulline takes its name from the watermelon, Citrullus, whose juice it was first isolated from. It is an amino acid the body does not build into proteins: it is an intermediate of the urea cycle, and the kidneys convert it into L-arginine. This is the basis of its use in supplements. Taken by mouth, arginine is largely broken down in the gut and liver before it reaches the bloodstream, while citrulline passes through and is converted afterwards, which is why published studies find oral citrulline raises plasma arginine more effectively than arginine itself. Ehlinar supplies pure L-citrulline and citrulline malate blends.
Appearance: White crystalline powder, odourless; soluble in water.

Frequently asked questions
- Citrulline or citrulline malate?
- Pure L-citrulline gives you the amino acid alone. Citrulline malate blends it with DL-malic acid, usually 2:1 or 1:1 by weight, so a gram of a 2:1 blend contains about two-thirds of a gram of citrulline. Compare products on their citrulline content, not on the blend weight.
- Why use citrulline instead of arginine?
- Because more of it arrives. Oral arginine is largely broken down by the enzyme arginase in the gut and liver, while citrulline passes through and is converted to arginine in the kidneys. Published human studies report a larger rise in plasma arginine from citrulline than from the same dose of arginine.
- Is L-citrulline kosher, halal or vegan?
- It is produced by fermentation, non-animal, and commonly certified. Ask for the certificate against the specific lot.
- How is it stored?
- Cool, dry and sealed.
