Acrylic Acid / AMPS Copolymer
CAS 40623-75-4 AA + AMPS copolymer
- CAS number
- 40623-75-4
- Formula
- AA + AMPS copolymer
- Molar mass
- No single formula · MW ~1,000–20,000 (by grade)
- Appearance
- Colourless to light-yellow transparent liquid.
The acrylic acid/AMPS copolymer is a sulfonated antiscalant and dispersant with high calcium and alkaline tolerance for cooling-water, RO and oilfield systems. Ehlinar sources it by active content and molecular weight; as a copolymer it is defined by solids and molecular weight rather than a purity figure.
Applications
Grades & packaging
Defined by solids/active content (around 40% minimum), molecular weight, free-monomer level (as AA ≤0.8%), density (≥1.15) and pH (3.5–4.5 at 1%) rather than a purity figure; grades differ by monomer ratio and neutralisation.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the purity of AA/AMPS copolymer?
- Purity % does not apply to a copolymer — it is specified by solids/active content and molecular weight, with limits on free monomer, density and pH.
- Which CAS goes on the documents?
- 40623-75-4 for the free-acid copolymer; a sodium-salt grade may carry a different identifier.
- Why choose it over a plain polyacrylate?
- The AMPS sulfonate groups give higher calcium tolerance and better performance in high-hardness, high-pH water.
