The acrylic acid/AMPS copolymer is a sulfonated antiscalant and dispersant built for water that defeats plain polyacrylates. The carboxyl groups do the scale inhibition and dispersion; the bulky sulfonate groups keep the polymer soluble when calcium is high and the pH is alkaline, which is precisely where a straight polyacrylate would drop out and stop working. It holds calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and zinc scale in suspension and disperses iron oxide. As a copolymer it is bought on solids content and molecular weight rather than a purity figure. Ehlinar supplies it by active content and molecular weight.
