Other Amino Acids

27 amino acids & relatives

These are amino acids and closely related compounds we supply without a page of their own, including the cysteine derivative NAC and the feed additive GAA. They go into sports and health supplements, animal feed, infant and hospital nutrition, medicines, cosmetics and the growth media used to make biological drugs. Each line gives the CAS number, the main uses and examples of the consumer products the material ends up in.

Delivery: Worldwide, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and the rest of the EU, the United Arab Emirates, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Quoted EXW, FOB, CIF or DAP.

Technical details

Most of the L-amino acids below are produced by microbial fermentation, typically with Corynebacterium glutamicum or Escherichia coli strains, and purified by ion exchange and crystallisation. L-Cystine is mainly recovered from keratin hydrolysates, and L-theanine is made enzymatically from glutamine and ethylamine. The racemic and non-proteinogenic products are synthetic: DL-methionine from acrolein, methyl mercaptan and hydrogen cyanide, taurine from ethylene oxide or monoethanolamine, beta-alanine from acrylonitrile or acrylic acid, and creatine from sarcosine and cyanamide.

Where the free form is impractical, the traded form is listed. Lysine trades as the monohydrochloride because the free base is hygroscopic and absorbs carbon dioxide; feed lysine is also sold as a granulated sulfate made directly from the fermentation broth. Asparagine trades as the monohydrate and ornithine as the hydrochloride. Grades follow the end use: feed, food (FCC, JECFA), pharmacopoeial (USP, EP, JP) for infusions and APIs, and low-endotoxin grades for cell-culture media.
