Agricultural additives
Agricultural additives are mixed into nitrogen fertilizers so that less of the nitrogen is lost before the crop can use it. Some slow the soil bacteria that turn nitrogen into a form that washes out of the ground; others slow the enzyme that lets urea escape into the air as ammonia. The crop gets more from the same amount of fertilizer, and less nitrogen ends up in water and air.
